Joining the Queensland Youth Choir

Joining the family

Eligibility

Applicants must be amateur singers who, at the beginning of February in the year of membership, meet the following school year level or age requirements:

Applicants may be considered for either of the relevant groups where year levels or ages overlap.

(Exceptions to the year levels will be allowed only at the discretion of the musical directors.)

Audition Requirements

Applicants for StellaVoce, Vivace Voices and VoiceWorks are required to perform one song of their own choice which best demonstrates their vocal talents. Sheet music must be brought to the audition. QYC will provide an accompanist.

A panel of professional QYC staff members will evaluate all applicants. The auditions are conducted in a friendly and supportive way, and are intended to recognise developed talent as well as the potential to learn and grow musically.

There are no audition requirements for Poco Voci, Bambino Music or Vox Populus.

Audition Dates

For current members of QYC, there is one round of formal auditions that is held in October/ November each year for membership in the following calendar year.

However, QYC is pleased to hear from interested young singers at any time and potential choristers may be auditioned and admitted during the year at the discretion of the musical directors. Such admissions may be subject to certain conditions with respect to participation in performances.

Applications to join Bambino Music will be accepted at any time.

Inquiries regarding auditions should be directed to the Administrative Director. An application form for the auditions may be downloaded from this page.

No positions in QYC groups are held permanently and membership is for one year only.

Country and Interstate Applicants

Country and interstate singers who will be resident in or near Brisbane in the coming year are encouraged to apply for QYC places. Applications must be received at the QYC office by the closing date. If an applicant is unable to attend the audition in person, alternative arrangements (eg. tape or deferred date) may be negotiated with the Administrative Director.

Commitment

Acceptance of a place in a QYC group is a serious commitment for the whole year. Before applying for an audition or accepting a place, applicants should consider their ability to comply with the compulsory attendance at rehearsals, camps and concerts, as well as the need to give high priority to all other performance calls.

Camps

StellaVoce, Vivace Voices and VoiceWorks attend a compulsory weekend music camp during March that forms an integral part of the year’s training program. The camps are held at church camp centres close to Brisbane and include choral rehearsals, sessions with professional choreographers/tutors and social activities.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals are held weekly at the Old Museum Building, cnr Gregory Terrace and Bowen Bridge Road, Bowen Hills. Attendance at rehearsals is compulsory.

Rehearsal times for 2009 are:

Poco Voci Wednesday 4:15 to 5:45pm or Saturday 11:00am to 12:30pm
StellaVoce Saturday 1:00 to 3:30pm
Vivace Voices Monday 7:00 to 9:00pm
VoiceWorks Tuesday 7:00 to 9:30pm
Vox Populus Wednesday 7:30 to 9:30pm
Bambino Music Tuesday mornings and Thursday mornings - various 30-minute classes

Concerts

Each QYC ensemble (individually and in combination) presents several public concerts during the year at venues around Brisbane. Participation in these concerts is compulsory.

QYC groups are also engaged by entertainment agencies, private individuals and corporations to perform at a variety of concerts, functions and events. The number and location of these varies from year to year. Members are expected to give a high priority to attendance at all such engagements.

Uniforms

The Queensland Youth Choirs has a set performance uniform for each ensemble which must be purchased by members.  QYC shirts, polo's and accessories are available through the organisation at very reasonable prices.  Members are required to provide black dress pants black socks/nearly black knee-hi's and black performance shoes.  More details are available through the QYC office.

Fees

All choristers must be financial members of QYC Inc. The annual fee (which includes membership, uniform hire, music, tuition and the annual 3-day camp) is payable in two instalments – the first in February and the second in July. Bambino Music fees are payable on a term basis.

Second and subsequent family members are entitled to a discount.

QYC has an excellent value for money fee structure - for more details on fees please contact the QYC Administrator by e-mailing admin@qldyouthchoir.com.au.
