Introduction
The Queensland Youth Choir performs at many events in and around Brisbane every year. These include sporting events, award presentations, convention opening and closing ceremonies, festivals, charity events and office functions.
Locally, the choirs have performed at World Expo 88, the opening of Sanctuary Cove (with Frank Sinatra), the official opening of the Brisbane International Airport, the Lord Mayor's Christmas Carols, Southbank Walkways and Christmas Lantern Parade, the opening ceremonies of the Goodwill Games and the 2000 Olympic soccer competition, the Golden Casket Christmas Celebrations at South Bank, numerous conventions, sporting events and charity performances. Individual members and small ensembles also perform regularly in professional musical theatre productions, opera, film and television productions and commercials. These opportunities provide QYC members with exceptional performance experiences that expand their horizons musically and personally.
The choir is often invited to perform at events that provide members with the opportunity to work with celebrity Australian and international performers. Over the years the choir has appeared with Michael Crawford, Rick Price, Gina Jeffries, Rolf Harris, Venetta Fields, The Seekers, Tom Burlinson, Karen Knowles, Jon English, Simon Gallaher, Tina Arena, Nana Mouskouri, Normie Rowe, and Jackie Trent and Tony Hatch.
The choir is able to perform a wide variety of musical styles including:
- Jazz
- Blues
- Evergreens
- Popular
- Classical
- World music
- Australiana
- Christmas music
- Gospel
- Music from stage shows
- Wedding anthems
The choir works with professional choreographers and this enables them to add an additional visual dimension to the overall effect.
As well as performing as a massed choir of up to 100 voices, the Choir also offers performances by individual ensembles of around 20 to 30 voices or small group performances of 8 to 16 voices.
